from the dept. I just found this site today - yours is truly a heart-wrenching story -My Father was diagnosed with ALS in March of 2001 - 3 months after my mom passed away from a different illness....... He passed away in August 2002 - a mere 16 months later. He had symptoms when my mom was ill , but we thought it was due to stress.By the time he went to the Doctor in March ,he was having slurred speech and weakness in his hands.I found out later he had already fallen a few times. It was very fast.We communicated with an alphabet board, and when he could no longer hold a pencil,we taled an antenna to his baseball cap so he could point to the board with that.He did end up with a peg tube for feeding, was in a wheelchair, and I had to suction him a few times. But he always laughed and was always the same wonderful person. He always said: THAT'S LIFE - he spelled that out to the Hospice Nurse once - and she almost cried. He died peacefully after being unresponsive for a few days.By then , he was ready. It sounds like you are a close-knit family , just hang in there.Lou Gehrig's is an awful disease - but seems to finally be getting the recognition it needs. It sound like possibly "they'll" come up with a cure.We can only pray.Be strong - my prayers are with you all ! It sounds like you have a great attitude Joyce - Be strong and hang in there! Patti
